- YouTube is cited by neural networks 200 times more often than any other video platform — TikTok, Vimeo, and Instagram are practically absent from AI answers
- Reddit remains the #1 source by citation volume — but YouTube has overtaken it in Google AI Overviews
- Only 11% of domains are cited simultaneously in both ChatGPT and Perplexity — each platform has its own source logic
- AI traffic converts at 14.2% versus 2.8% for regular Google search, a fivefold difference, according to a synthesis of six independent studies covering 680 million citations
- The overlap between what ranks in Google's top 10 and what gets cited by neural networks has dropped from 70% to 20% over two years
AI citation donors are the sites and platforms that neural networks use as sources when generating answers. In 2026, this list of donors looks fundamentally different from what ranks in traditional search. According to the 5W AI Platform Citation Source Index (May 2026), which synthesized 680 million citations, the top 15 domains capture 68% of all AI citation activity. If your brand isn’t part of this ecosystem, AI simply doesn’t know you exist.
What Breaks the Usual SEO Logic — Right From the Start

Most marketers think this way: rank #1 on Google, and you’ll show up in AI Overviews. Logical. But wrong.
According to Brandlight (April 2026), the overlap between what sits in Google’s top 10 and what neural networks cite for the same queries dropped from 70% in early 2024 to 20% by April 2026. And it’s still falling.
80% of the sources that ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews insert into their answers are not what ranks in Google’s top ten. The neural network is looking somewhere else entirely.
But here’s what’s important to understand before getting into specific platforms: every AI system has its own hierarchy of sources. Optimizing “for AI” isn’t one task. It’s three different tasks for three different audiences. That’s exactly what comes next.
YouTube: The Donor Nobody Saw Coming

Let’s start with the least obvious one.
Tell a marketer “YouTube matters for GEO,” and they’ll think about channel growth. Subscribers. Views. But a neural network looks at YouTube in a completely different way.
Neural networks don’t watch videos. They read transcripts. Metadata. Descriptions. The structured content that YouTube automatically generates and makes available for parsing. A video featuring a real expert is a verifiable source of live expertise. It’s harder to fabricate than an article. AI platforms are starting to recognize the difference.
The numbers speak for themselves: according to BrightEdge (October 2025), YouTube is cited 200 times more often than any other video platform. Vimeo sits at 0.1%. TikTok at 0.1%. In the world of video, neural networks work almost exclusively with YouTube.
According to BrightEdge, YouTube appears in 29.5% of Google AI Overviews answers, the number one spot among all domains. For comparison: Mayo Clinic, one of the most authoritative medical sites in the world, is in second place with 12.5%.
In January 2026, YouTube officially overtook Reddit as the most cited social source in LLM answers over the past six months: 16% versus 10%, according to Adweek, citing data from AI marketing platform Bluefish. Adweek called it a ‘complete reversal’ compared to mid-2025.
One critically important technical detail: OtterlyAI (May 2026) found that 94% of YouTube AI citations come from long-form videos, 10+ minutes. Shorts are almost never cited. The neural network is looking for depth, not a clip.
Reddit: Still #1 by Volume — But the Story Got More Complicated
Reddit hasn’t died as a donor. But what happened to it in late 2025 changes the strategy.
According to SEMrush (a 13-week study of 230,000 prompts), Reddit is cited in roughly 40% of answers across all major AI systems combined. But within that figure, there’s a wide spread.
In September 2025, Reddit’s share specifically within ChatGPT dropped from roughly 60% to around 10% within weeks. Two explanations compete here. The popular one: Google removed a parameter that let ChatGPT see the top 100 search results, cutting off Reddit posts that typically rank below the top 10. But Semrush’s own analysis casts doubt on that story — only 34% of Reddit’s rankings fall in that lost zone (positions 21–100), not enough to explain a drop this sharp. Semrush’s head of AI visibility instead points to a deliberate move by OpenAI to reduce over-reliance on any single source.
Perplexity, meanwhile, continues to lean on Reddit for 46.7% of its top citations — the platforms run on different logic, and that’s critical for strategy.
Why do neural networks even favor Reddit in the first place? Research from SE Ranking, cited by CMSWire (April 2026), found that domains with millions of mentions on Reddit and Quora are roughly four times more likely to get cited than domains with no community presence. Live discussions, real experience, structured Q&A — this is exactly the format AI can easily extract as a ready-made answer fragment.
Wikipedia, LinkedIn, Quora, G2: Each Has Its Own Niche on the AI Map

This is where most GEO guides stop at just listing platforms. We’re going further, because what matters isn’t just what gets cited, but where and why.
Wikipedia is the foundation of ChatGPT. 26–48% of top-10 citations, 7.8% overall citation share. ChatGPT builds its answers on “consensus knowledge,” and Wikipedia is its closest equivalent. For Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, Wikipedia is less dominant, there, fresh UGC wins out.
LinkedIn is the biggest surprise of early 2026. According to Profound (March 2026), LinkedIn is the #1 source for professional queries across all five major AI systems simultaneously: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot, and Google AI Overviews. It appears in 11% of all AI answers. It jumped from 11th place to 5th in ChatGPT in three months. For B2B brands, this is no longer optional.
Quora is especially strong in Google AI Overviews. The same logic as Reddit applies: structured questions and answers are easy for AI to parse and extract.
G2 and Trustpilot are both among the top 100 most cited domains across all major AI systems, each covering its own niche. G2 is for B2B software: according to Zenith AI, it’s one of ChatGPT’s main sources when answering queries about SaaS and enterprise tools. Trustpilot covers the broader consumer market and services. For B2B, this is no longer a marketing nice-to-have, it’s visibility infrastructure.
A Single “Optimize for AI” Strategy Doesn’t Work. Here’s Why.
This is the systemic mistake in most GEO approaches.
“Optimize for AI search” sounds like one task. In reality, it’s three different tasks for three different systems, each with its own source logic.
Leapd (April 2026): out of 680 million citations, only 11% of domains appear in both ChatGPT and Perplexity simultaneously. Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode cite the same URLs in only 13.7% of cases, even though they produce similar-looking answers.
A brand that’s highly visible in Google AI Overviews can be completely invisible in Perplexity. And vice versa.
Discovered Labs (January 2026) summarizes each platform’s logic:
ChatGPT — consensus: Wikipedia (7.8%), competitive sites, “Best X of 2025” pages. Claude cites pages with bullet-pointed structure 30% more often.
Perplexity — UGC: Reddit (46.7% of top citations), real experience, fresh content. Queries involving live user opinion.
Google AI Overviews — multi-format: YouTube (29.5%), Reddit (21%), Wikipedia, Quora. Maintains a 54% overlap with organic rankings, higher than the other platforms.
The strategy of “write an article, get picked up by AI” only works for Google AI Overviews. Perplexity and ChatGPT require a different set of actions entirely.
What This Means in Practice — and How We Use It
At Neurotool AI, we build this logic into every article at the writing stage. But content on the website is only part of the equation.
Neuro-blocks, verified sources, and proper formatting help AI systems find and cite your material. Platforms — YouTube, Reddit, LinkedIn — reinforce that signal externally. Together, that’s what full AI visibility actually looks like. And it pays off: AI traffic converts several times better than organic traffic, the user arrives already close to a decision, not at the start of a search.
Full AI visibility in the English-language market is built on five platforms:
YouTube — long-form videos (10+ minutes) with clear structure and transcripts. This is no longer just “content for the audience.” It’s a donor for AI.
Reddit — genuine answers in relevant subreddits, with no promotional tone. Neural networks are better at distinguishing organic discussions from disguised advertising than people assume.
LinkedIn — active posts with a point of view, data, expertise. Not a corporate page maintained as a formality. Perplexity cites company pages in 59% of cases.
Wikipedia — for brands with enough history, this is a direct path into ChatGPT’s answers.
Quora — direct answers to specific audience questions in Q&A format.
The Map Changes Faster Than SEO Rules Do
In early 2025, everyone was saying: “Go to Reddit.” By late 2025, Reddit had overtaken Wikipedia. By early 2026, YouTube had overtaken Reddit. LinkedIn climbed from 11th place to 5th in three months.
This isn’t instability. It’s a structural shift: neural networks are learning to tell verifiable expertise apart from anonymous opinion. YouTube wins because a video featuring a real person is harder to fabricate. LinkedIn is growing because professional content with a named author and job title is E-E-A-T in its purest form.
A single website no longer delivers full AI visibility. You need an ecosystem: the right content on the right platforms, and articles written so that a ready-made answer can be extracted from them.
That’s exactly what we build into every piece of content.
